Join Bike Tours Funen on an active cycling holiday on Sydfyn. Experience all the best that the South Funen Sea has to offer. Bike Tours Funen has arranged everything for you so that you can experience South Funen and the island sea slowly. Based in Svendborg and Faaborg, you get everything that is typical of South Funen and the island sea. Look forward to the sea, islands, nature, flavors and cities.

The South Funen Archipelago tour is amazing views and nature experiences with the sea in the center peppered with charming towns, buildings and completely local experiences and taste specialties.

Sailing is an important part of your vacation here. The ferry trip to Ærø gives you an exciting insight into life on the small islands, which are inhabited by only a few people. Ærø is a highlight in itself with its impressive landscape, where small farms lie idyllically located between the rolling hills and small maritime towns. In addition to Ærø, you will have the opportunity to experience the small, scenic islands Thurø, Tåsinge and Avernakø. If you arrive early in Svendborg or if you extend your stay in Svendborg, you can experience several of the very small islands. Along the way, you will stay and move close to nature and lovely sandy beaches.

It is possible to extend the journey with a visit to Egeskov Castle, the island's unconditional biggest attraction, or a trip to Odense, the “capital” of Funen. Odense is the hometown of the world-renowned poet and writer Hans Christian Andersen, and the city offers charming streets, fascinating museums and galleries, inviting green parks and lovely cafés. Odense is also known for being a very bike-friendly city. The best way to explore this modern, vibrant and authentic city is actually by bike.

Daytime Program

Day 1: Arrival Svendborg

If you arrive early to your hotel and bring your own bicycles, you have the opportunity to explore Svendborg city or already start your island hopping holiday in the South Funen island sea. From Svendborg you can take the ferry to Drejø, Skarø or Hjortø. If you are going for a short bike ride, we have created a bike route for you that takes you around South East Funen, where there are several small producers of good beer, must, wine and spirits.

Accommodation Svendborg.

Day 2: Full day in Svendborg on Thurø and Tåsinge 25 km. or 53 km.

Today it is obvious to go on a longer trip. We propose a bike ride to Tåsinge via Thurø, and we have prepared it in our material for you. From Thurø you can enjoy a boat trip with the veteran ship M/S Helge, which brings you to Tåsinge, where Valdemars Castle is located (The trip with M/S Helge is self-paid and not included in the price). The route from the ferry to Valdemar Castle offers cosy half-timbered houses, small farm shops and Ambrosiusegen — a 400-year-old oak tree. As you cycle along the serene roads, you will pass by breathtaking scenery and beautiful views. It is also here at Tåsinge that you can get the story of the tragic love story between Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre. They died here and lie buried in the nearby cemetery, and the local Tåsinge museum has an exhibition featuring the story.

On your way around the short or long trip at Tåsinge, you can also stop by the cozy harbor Skovballe Havn and enjoy the fresh sea air. For us, a visit equals a visit to Svendborgsund Bryghus. It is located at the end of the trip, so you may need a little liquid.

Accommodation Svendborg.

Day 3: Svendborg - Ærø 29 km.

Today the ferry trip goes from Svendborg to Ærøskøbing on Ærø. Everywhere on the island you will find farm shops selling vegetables, fruit and honey. In Ærøskøbing, the narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses with hollyhocks make you feel almost drawn to the 18th century. Remember to buy the most amazing liquorice confection at Hattesens Konfektfabrik on the harbour in Ærøskøbing. On Vesterstrand in Ærøskøbing you will find the colorful bathhouses, and of course you will visit them before continuing southeast along the coast to Marstal.

Before you arrive at the hotel, the route offers a tour of the city and to the good bathing beach Eriks Hale beach. If there is time for more, the Maritime Museum is worth a visit. If you get tired on the way, the bus at Ærø is free and it includes bicycles.

Overnight Marstal

Day 4: Ærø - Faaborg 36 km.

Today we walk along the beautiful coastline of Ærø from Marstal to Søby. On the tour you will experience Bregninge Church, the natural gem Voderup Klint and the protected Vitsø Mølle. During the whole trip there is never far from the beach or a cozy bench with good views. Ærø has many small producers of all kinds of exciting products, so don't miss this before you leave the island. In our guidebook we tell you about the possibilities.

Halfway through the tour is Ærø's own brewhouse, which you will find with a small detour from the coastal cycling route. Lunch can be purchased here, but be sure to check opening hours. At the end of the trip towards Søby you will find the historic manor Søbygård, located in the middle of a lake. In Søby, the ferry sails to Faaborg, where today's lovely hotel stay awaits.

Accommodation Faaborg.

Day 5: Full day in Faaborg and surrounding area and visit to Avernakø 41 km.

The day offers several possibilities. Faaborg is a cozy and charming town with harbor and harbor baths, and then there are several very interesting museums in the city. We have made a bike tour that will take you to Svanninge Bakker, which is one of the most exciting natural areas in Funen. On the way there you pass Kaleko Mølle, known among other things from the Christmas calendar Nissebanden, and you will also pass by the small village of Diernæs. Along the route there are beautiful forests and a highlight is the castle Brahetrolleborg with the most beautiful rhodendron park in the season. From Brahetrolleborg you can see with a good eye or a pair of binoculars the world famous in Denmark, Jim Lyngvald's Viking castle, Ravnsborg. The route is 25 km.

If you really want to make the most of the day, you should go island hopping to the small scenic island of Avernakø (and maybe also Lyø). Here you can experience good beaches, fishing waters, the special island life and a rich bird life. The route on Avernakø is 16 km. Be sure to check the ferry times.

Accommodation Faaborg.

Day 6: Faaborg - Svendborg 44 km.

Today you cycle from Faaborg to Svendborg on this last stretch of your cycling holiday. On the way to Svendborg you cycle on an idyllic route along the coastline, but you will also pass by Holstenshuus Castle with its impressive park and two giant trees, the so-called Sequias.

If you want a very special hiking experience along the way on the bike trip, then we have a suggestion for it, but we will reveal it first in the guidebook you will take with you on your cycling holiday.

Along the way there are many small nice places where you can take a break both in forests and at viewpoints or at one of the small cozy harbors you pass along the route.

The last step towards the hotel in Svendborg you will pass Lehnskov Gods and cycle almost at the water's edge. At Rantzausminde harbour before the town of Svendborg appears, you can end the trip with an ice cream or whatever you want.

Accommodation Svendborg.

Day 7: Departure from Svendborg

You have reached the end of the trip and it is time to soak up the last of Funen's cosiness and romance.

Enjoy the beautiful natural areas around the hotel with a walk along the water, or visit the city's cozy streets and beautiful cafes. If you have time on the way home, you should visit Egeskov Castle or you can make a stop in Odense and visit the H. C. Andersen exhibition, the Danish Railway Museum, the Odense Zoo and the interesting open-air museum, The Funen Village. The capital of Funen exudes coziness and idyll and is definitely worth a visit.

In our guidebook we have a special tip on where you can stay on the way home, but we save that as a surprise.
